“I am pleased to share some fantastic news, that many foundation and voluntary aided schools may not be aware of: there is up to £7 million of levy funding available to them…
This funding can not only support a graduate to train to teach in these schools, it can also lead to significant financial benefits for the employer school if they support a trainee for September 2024.
As many Foundation and Voluntary Aided schools are non-levy paying organisations, accessing levy funding for apprentice training has often been difficult or impossible. If one of these schools has its own Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) account, they can apply for a levy transfer from organisations who are looking to share (gift) their levy to support the training of an apprentice.
Schools are eligible to access up to £9,000 of levy transfer funds for each apprentice teacher they hire. These funds can only be spent on apprenticeship training costs, but where schools support a trainee in shortage subject, this will open up additional funding to the school, via the grant funding available (see below):
You can search for organisations offering levy transfer here:
If a school appoints an apprentice teacher in a shortage subject, the following salary grant funding is available to your school:
- £28,000 for Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics
- £16,000 for Geography & Biology
- £1,000 for English
*Note: In addition, if any apprentice is under 26 at the start of the course; your school would be exempt from employers National Insurance contributions, representing a further saving to your school.
